International collaborations investigating trends in child maltreatment using linked data. Additionally, we have researchers using commonwealth pharmaceutical data to investigate child outcomes after maternal use of prescription drugs during pregnancy. The institute has established and maintains a number of population based registers, such as the Cerebral Palsy database and the Birth Defects Register.

The overarching aim of this research is to contribute to the evidence-base that delivers equitable developmental opportunities for children, particularly birth to four years.

Research interests: Developing the capacity to conduct large-scale observational comparative outcome analyses. With the assistance of the Ministry of Health and PHARMAC, NZ’s public drugs purchaser, we have begun work on a small portfolio of comparative studies, including the assessment of differential outcomes in: women taking short vs. long courses of trastuzumab (Herceptin) for breast cancer (a significant controversial topic in NZ); women taking tamoxifen for breast cancer, plus or minus paroxetine or fluoxetin (Paxil and Prozac) for depression (the latter drugs seem to block the effect of tamoxifen); and people with multiple sclerosis taking (vs. not taking) beta interferon. The latter two analyses are being conducted in association with colleagues in British Columbia.
